Plain-English guide
What your IP address means, and what it shows.
Every device on the internet needs a return address so pages and messages know where to go. Here is how it works.
What an IP address is
An IP address is a number assigned to your internet connection by your provider. Like a return address on an envelope, it tells websites where to send the page, image or video you just asked for.
Public vs. private IP
Your Wi-Fi router gives each phone and laptop at home a private address (such as 192.168.1.10) used only inside your home. Your router shares one public IP address with the outside world — that is the one shown at the top of this page.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
Older IPv4 addresses are four numbers separated by dots, like 8.8.8.8. Because the world ran short of those, newer IPv6 addresses use eight longer groups of letters and digits separated by colons, like 2001:4860:4860::8888. Both work the same way.
What websites can tell from it
A website can look up your country, approximate city or region, time zone, EU status and internet provider. That helps sites pick the right language, currency or local rules.
What it never reveals
An IP address never reveals who you are, your name, email, phone number or street address. It only points to the area and network provider handling your connection.

Frequently asked questions
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
No. An IP address only points to the general area where your internet provider routes traffic — usually a city or region, plus the name of the provider. It never reveals your name, street address, phone number or email.
Why does my IP show a different city?
Internet providers assign IP blocks across a region, and mobile networks often route traffic through a central hub in another city. Country is very reliable, while city is always an approximation.
Why do I see an IPv6 address instead of four numbers?
Most modern broadband and mobile networks prefer IPv6 when both your device and the website support it. Your connection usually has both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address, and either one tells websites your approximate region.
Does my public IP address change over time?
Usually, yes. Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic IP address that can change when you restart your router, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or reconnect after a few days.
How can I detect visitors' country and time zone on my own site?
Call https://api.ipatlas.dev/v1/me from the browser or /v1/{ip} from your backend. It is free for 50,000 lookups a month with no credit card — see the documentation or pricing.
